Humperdinck comes from Welsh, German, and Anglo-Indian heritage. When he was ten, his family moved to Leicester, England. At that time, Engelbert started playing the saxophone and later began singing in the late '50s after playing the saxophone in nightclubs. He was known for doing an impression of Jerry Lewis, so his friends called him Gerry Dorsey, which was his stage name for close to ten years. His music career plans were paused when he had to serve in the British Army Royal Corps of Signals.

In the middle of the 1960s, Humperdinck went to Spain to meet with German songwriter Bert Kaempfert and presented arrangements for three songs: "Spanish Eyes," "Strangers in the Night," and "Wonderland by Night."
